The destructive opener from England, Jason Roy has decided to opt-out of the upcoming season of IPL. He was recently bought by the Gujarat Titans at a base price of INR 2 Cr at the mega auction.
Roy, who was unsold in the previous year’s IPL auction, would have been a front choice opener for his franchise. But, he has decided not to play the IPL 2022 due to bio-bubble fatigue.
He has also informed his new franchise about his unavailability. In our article, we take a look at five players who can be signed by Gujarat Titans for a replacement of Jason Roy.
#5 Martin Guptill
The right-handed opener from New Zealand, Martin Guptill would be a perfect replacement for England’s Roy at Gujarat Titans. He is one of the few players who could launch an attack on the opponent bowlers from the very first delivery.
It’s difficult to stop him once he settles as he can trash any bowling lineup. He also adds plenty of experience to the squad and helps them to clinch the title in their very first season.
#4 Paul Stirling
Paul String from Ireland is one of the few openers who has been in good touch with the bat in recent times. Though he has done well in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League, he could not get any bidders at the mega auction of IPL 2022.
However, he might get a chance to play the cash-rich T20 league. Just like Roy and Guptill, he is a destructive opener and can also provide a couple of overs if a captain needs.
#3 David Wiese
If the management wants to strengthen the lower middle-order, they should be looking at David Wiese. He is one of the few all-rounders who could contribute with both the bat and the ball.
Wiese is arguably the hard-hitter with the bat and also has wicket-taking abilities with the ball. With the form he has in the recent games, he would be a perfect option for Hardik Pandya and co.
#2 Dawid Malan
Despite being at No.4 in the ICC T20I rankings, he failed to attract the franchises at the IPL 2022 auction. With Shubman Gill already as an opener, it will not be a good option to play Malan as an opener as both has the same kind of play.
However, the management can slot him at No.3 to anchor the innings and provide a good platform for the finishers like David Miller and Hardik Pandya.
#1 Colin Munro
Colin Munro’s recent form has been phenomenal in Big Bash League and other T20 leagues. He proved himself as an opener and a No.3, No.4 batsman as well in the recently concluded BBL.
As he can bat at any position and the form is on his side, the management can him in the playing eleven ahead of Matthew Wade and David Miller. He also helps his skipper by bowling a few overs of medium-pace.
